The Tanzania Nursing and Midwifery Council (TNMC)
Was established by Act of parliament No. 1 of 2010 as the successor of the Council established under Nurses and Midwives Registration Act No. 12 of 1997 and Nurse and Midwives (Registration) Ordinance Cap 325 of 1953. The repeal in the enabling Act of the Council was purposeful as to provide broader meaning with regard to development general in Tanzania.
Due to increased need of services for Nurses and Midwifery in Tanzania; the mandatory functions for the Council to protect, promote and preserve public health, safety and welfare through regulation and control of nursing and midwifery education and practice was necessary.
The Tanzania Nursing and Midwifery Council as a policy body is mandated to participate consciously orient Tanzania Community on better and standard services offered by nurses and midwives.
The Council therefore works as the regulatory body on matter concerning training and practice (service) for nurses and midwives in the country.
In order to achieve the intended objective of the Council to manage training and practice (services) of nurses and midwives in the country; the council is dedicated to deploy among others the following working tools:
- The Nursing and Midwifery Act No. 1 of 2010 as amended
- Regulations made under section 49 of the Nursing and Midwifery Act
- The Ministry of Health Policy
- National Nursing and Midwifer
